Tasman Bays Textile ResQ Collective formed in mid-2023 to cut the amount of textiles dumped in local landfills through repair, upcycling and on donation.
We are following the incredibly successful model of Intercept Fabric Rescue Group and Salvation Army Family Store of Whangarei. We plan to replicate their success (only 2-3% of donations going to landfill) locally. We have partnered with Nelson Tasman Hospice Opshops to take items that are unsuitable for sale, and transform them into saleable ones. Hospice benefits from increased revenue and reduced disposal fees. We help them deliver on their slogan of “Sustainable Shopping.”
Our activity has 5 strands
- Environment – reduce the amount of textiles going to landfill
- Education – inform people about the problems arising from ‘fast fashion’ and teach repair and upcycling skills
- Community – provide opportunities for people to meet together for a positive cause
- Creative – provide opportunities to transform waste textiles into unique, beautiful products
- Fundraising – increase Nelson Tasman Hospice income and reduce waste disposal costs
We offer work sessions two days a week for volunteers to work collectively. Volunteers can also work from home. We welcome new volunteers and can offer many different roles, so sewing skills are not essential.
