Tahunanui School is the heart of an important seaside community situated between Nelson City and Stoke. We treasure our special location in the east (Rawhiti) of Tasman Bay, with the ever-present sea breeze (Muritai) and sand dunes (Tahuna) acknowledged in the names of our surrounding streets and school colours.
Adjacent to Nelson’s main shipping port, domestic airport and popular tourist beach, Tahunanui is a busy hub of both work and leisure and draws people from around New Zealand and the world who might just be visiting or choose to stay for longer periods. This diversity of inter-generational residents and newcomers is celebrated and seen as a huge advantage for our school which strives to be welcoming and inclusive as well as academically excellent.
The Tahunanui community is very proud and supportive of our school and is actively involved in school events to enhance the education and lives of their children. The school grounds with stunning solar heated swimming pool, wonderful play equipment, performing arts hall and modern library are enjoyed by the whole community and the school also benefits from close associations with local pre-schools, community and medical centres, church groups, the Akonga Whakatu cluster of schools, businesses, sporting and cultural organisations and facilities.
Tahunanui School has continued to evolve over 117 years into an exciting, dynamic learning environment committed to meeting the needs of all students and their families dreams and aspirations. Children are at the heart of our highly engaging and relevant curriculum which develops the SAIL values and “I can, I will” attitude required to become confident, active and responsible citizens of the future.
