The iconic Sacred Heart Marble Churchwas consecrated on 15th September 1918 by Archbishop Thomas O’Shea assisted by Frs Tymons and Kimbell before a large congregation. Up until the Christchurch earthquake in 2011, it remained the oldest marble Catholic Church still in use in New Zealand.
It is our earnest hope that we would be able to use this marble church again. The church needs some structural strengthening for which we have set up this fund-raising project. Though not currently used for church services, the church is maintained by a group of volunteers from the Golden Bay community.
