The Roding River Catchment Care group is a passionate community initiative dedicated to restoring the health of the Roding River and its surrounding landscapes. Their work spans the catchment from the Roding Dam to the confluence with the Lee River, where volunteers monitor water quality, assess ecosystem health, and carry out riparian planting alongside pest and weed control.
Working closely with Tasman District Council, the group is also helping enhance local river reserves so they can be enjoyed by the wider community. These spaces offer an opportunity to showcase restoration work in action and help people understand how caring for our waterways improves the health of the whole environment.
The group is working to protect and enhance rare plants and wildlife within the catchment, improving biodiversity and strengthening the resilience of this important ecosystem. Collaboration is at the heart of their approach, with partners including Tasman Bay Guardians, New Zealand Landcare Trust, Hope School, Tasman District Council, Nelson City Council, DOC, forestry companies, private landowners, and funding organisations.
What began as a small group of dedicated volunteers has grown into a long-term commitment to the river they care deeply about. Their vision is simple but powerful: a healthy Roding River and thriving catchment that future generations can enjoy and take pride in.
