Nelson Environment Centre are an independent not-for-profit organisation that helps the Nelson Tasman community live more sustainably and reduce its impact on the environment. We are the longest serving Environment Centre in New Zealand and have been proudly serving our community since 1976.

Reuse shops on site – The ReUse Shops started in 1992, humble beginnings from a tiny shed!
We now have two stores onsite and have since grown to become a well-known local facility and affordable Nelson opshop that keeps resources in circulation & out of landfill. Your go-to Nelson op shop for a great selection of secondhand items, from clothing & shoes, to books, electronics, furniture, kitchenware, spare parts, DIY materials, camping & sports equipment, tools, and basically anything else you can think of!

Weekly tender is run from the front shop for items that are antique or collectible, quirky, brand new or expensive to buy.  Anyone interested can place a silent bid in the store using our digital bidding system instore.  Bidding closes at the end of each Wednesday and items can be collected and paid for by cash/eftpos in the store on Thursday.

E Waste Recycling – An estimated 80,000 tonnes of Electronic Waste is being disposed into landfill in New Zealand each year. E Waste contains rare heavy metals, as well as materials that are toxic to the environment when they break down. It is estimated that E Waste contributes to 40% of the lead and 70% of the heavy metals found in landfill. At the Nelson Environment Centre we will recycle your Electronic Waste to keep it out of landfill and reuse what we can.

Drop Off – the public can drop off items as long as they’re of reasonable quality and suitable for resale, which is at the discretion of staff. All items are dropped off at the back shop, just past the public recycling drop off area (except electronics which need to be taken to our E-Waste team located at the front shop).  Please note that we are unable to accept safety items such as life jackets, car safety seats, helmets and seat belts as we cannot guarantee their condition.
