The Nelson Asthma Society is a registered charitable organisation.

Our Mission Statement is to assist people with asthma, and related respiratory conditions through improved self-management, education and support.

Asthma is a common lung condition that affects the breathing tubes (airways) that carry air in and out of your lungs.  Asthma causes wheeze and cough, and can make it difficult to breathe.  New Zealand has one of the highest rates of asthma in the world, affecting up to 1 in 7 children and 1 in 9 adults.  We can’t guard ourselves against getting asthma, but we can control how much it affects our life.

Work with your doctor, nurse and pharmacist and keep active.

The word “asthma” comes from the Greek word for “panting attack”.
