Fairfield House rests on 7 acres of land located at the top of Trafalgar Street looking directly over the Cathedral and down to the ocean. Today the house and its grounds are open to all. It is a much-loved heritage venue and a lively center for the community.
In 1979, Fairfield was saved from planned demolition through direct action of some idealists committed to respect for lands and histories, and building community. The restoration of the house and lands was a huge task and succeeded due to the dedication and hard work of many people united by these values and vision. Since then, Fairfield House has been fully restored and now holds Category 1 heritage protection status. The surrounding reserve is also recognised as a Heritage Woodland. The work has continued through 45 years – restoring not only the house and lands, but also creating an intergenerational active community center.
Community involvement has shaped Fairfield into what it is today. Friends of Fairfield manages the site on a self-funding basis, supported by events, venue hire, memberships, donations, grants, and countless volunteer hours. Today, Fairfield House and Reserve is a lively community venue, hosting cultural, educational, arts and social events. We are proud to support not-for-profit groups by offering affordable and flexible hire options. The Friends of Fairfield committee, alongside many dedicated supporters, continues to care for this special place. We welcome membership and donations from the community.
Our mission is to to care for Fairfield House and Reserve with integrity and creativity, protecting its heritage, supporting community wellbeing, and ensuring it remains welcoming, accessible, and financially sustainable for future generations.
